Whirlwind

16 Oct

**I want to say that it is really hard to blog from the boat and I haven’t wanted to take time away from our amazing days, so for the time being, and until I can edit my posts without using satallite Internet and $.95 a minute, please pardon my spelling and grammatical errors. It takes like 5 minutes {aka $5} to fix each error.

Ok onto the blog post:
I feel like it has been forever since my last post, maybe it is more that so much has happened. On my last post I left off in the rainy town of Old Corfu. The hubs and I spent the day wandering around the old fortress, trying to make the most of our wet feet and inability to take any decent photos of the fortress.

After the fort we made our way into the shops and bars. Yes, lots and lots of bars — it’s not that we were looking to drink in the middle of the day, but that seems to be the style here. Everywhere we go there are bars and they are all packed. People aren’t even really sitting in them but more congregating inside, outside, and around them. It seems to be the thing to do.

We did our best to take part. As we sat there in Corfu having tea and baklava, the entire table of about 9 Grecian men were pretty much staring a hole in me {I’m assuming its my bright blonde hair that is rare here}…but its a bit awkward. We quickly ate, drank our tea and made our way back to the boat. We hopped into the hot tub and enjoyed the rain on our faces from the comfort of the ship and of course with expresso in hand {I think my great grandpa would be proud}.

We had dinner reservations at one of the ships specialty restaurants and were so excited! Unfortunately, the seas decided to take a turn for the worse and it got bad, really bad. Even the wait staff was saying this was not normal. We ended up having to have dessert sent to the room, and I never ended up trying it. Sea sick, yet again. Let me just say that I know I have a weak tummy, but last night was awful, even the hubs was sick. Turns out they had issued some sort of warning and this morning we weren’t even able to make it to our port of Taormina.
Huge disappointment for us. What made it even more upsetting was that as we left the boat today in our new port of Messina, we were surprised to learn that nearly everything was closed….except of course the bars and churches being that it is Sunday.

Upon exiting the boat we somehow took a wrong turn and ended up in what we called “dog poo and trash messy-ina”. We thought we had followed the map — apparently not! After a couple of hours we were both exhausted and annoyed. As we made our way back to the boat we got a bit turned around, and thank goodness we did! We found ourselves in a cleaner part of town and most importantly one open restaurant! We went in, sat down, and ordered some wine.

It was exactly what we needed! When we walked in, one of my all time favorite songs was playing….Sailing by Styx, it was almost as if it was meant to be. As the “takes me away” was belted over the speakers I could have danced. Pizza, caprese {my ultimate fav}, wine, bread, and the one thing I have been waiting to try this whole time a — real canoli!!! I was elated!
When I got my canoli I started eating it with a fork….the cute man who owned the place quickly corrected me. I picked it up with my hands and finished the whole thing :) and I was ok with the whole Messina thing. We wandered the empty streets some more and are now sitting in the sun, on the pool deck drinking more expresso.
